The event of Expo 98 opened in Lisbon on may 22nd and it was an opportunity to rebuild a new city using the last concepts of making urbanism and architecture. We can say that our times seems destined to create lines necessary to draw the city concern of functional exigencies, to avoid social problems and to the correct utilisation of our remaining reserves at the same time. An event of this size, taking place in the fading light of a rich century in experience like 20th was, represents an excellent opportunity to review and develop these concepts.

The urban development project covers 340 hectares in eastern Lisbon, including 5km of river front property on the Tagus river estuary. We can consider the intervention about the event like a new little city inside the old big one, that support residential quarters, stores, services, own urban infrastructure, parking and other urban facilities, parks and more.

For many, Expo 98 is seen not only as a way of promoting the country and its capital, but above all as a catalyst in the functional and urbanistic regeneration process of eastern Lisbon.
